It was a good night not only for the British at the Golden Globes in Beverly Hills last night! Olivia Colman, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Taron Egerton and Sir Sam Mendez among the big winners.

And for the fifth time (not in a row) the Golden Globes were hosted by Ricky Gervais, another Brit, albeit with a somewhat dubious sense of humour. So it seems that at least as far as movies are concerned, the United Kingdom is still a power to be reckoned with. And talking about Kingdom: Olivia Colman’s stellar performance as Queen Elizabeth II in the Netflix production in ‘The Crown’ is an absolute must see.

Despite Netflix dominating the conversation ahead of the ceremony, with 11 nominations in total for its two major contenders Marriage Story and The Irishman, the streaming service picked up just one award – best supporting actress, for Marriage Story’s Laura Dern. No doubt with their production budget (see my yesterday’s post), Netflix will sooner or later land winners in the top categories.

So now I need to get cracking, watching all the movies, series and TV programs which just got honoured, as the next awards ceremony is just around the corner: The 92nd Academy Awards (better known as the Oscars) will take place on 9 February….
