I am sure she wasn’t best pleased, her Majesty the Queen, when the Duke and Duchess of Sussex announced that they would be stepping down from or at least much reducing the royal duties and sharing their time now between the U.K. and North America. Apparently no member of the royal family was consulted over the decision and they were taken by surprise by the statement just as everyone else. The Daily Mail reports that both the Queen and Prince Charles are fuming.
But doesn’t that happen in most families? Not that offspring releases public statements about where they are going to live, but that they leave home and wish to forge their own careers and lifes for that matter? Quite honestly I can’t blame the Sussexes for wanting to step a bit out of the limelight (if that is at all possible fo royalty). But in most families such moves would have been discussed.
So one can’t help wondering whether all is well within the British royal household. There have been rumours about a rift between Prince Harry and Prince William for a while, and particularly since the Sussexes tour of southern Africa last October and a quite candid behind-the-scenes documentary aired on British television. This statement certainly only confirms that in some respect the royal family is just, well, normal.
And maybe this is just the British monarchy becoming a bit less stuffy, thanks to the young royals nevertheless, much like the royals in Scandinavia. Maybe this is just a much loved but somewhat stuffy institution getting a much needed makeover.
The British royal family won’t be liked any less for that, it just makes them a bit more human. And I think that’s a development which should be applauded.
And after the Brexit we now got the Megxit.
